Hyundai has a new luxury spinoff brand: the 2017 Genesis, whose current lineup is the G90 and G80.

The G80 is currently available at Hyundai dealers, and the G90 at select locations. Stand alone Genesis dealers will emerge in a few years with additional models.
Available with a twin-turbo charged 3.3-liter V6 with 365 horsepower or a 5.0 liter V8 with 420 horsepower, the Genesis G90 is a fully loaded upscale luxury sedan. Both options are available with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive and with eight-speed automatic transmissions. They require premium-grade fuel. The engine options don’t do much for fuel efficiency. The V6 averages 17 mpg in city driving, 24 mpg on the highway.

Priced around $69,000, the G90 defines luxury. The 3.3-liter turbo was my test vehicle, and it was surprisingly agile for its size.

Unlike luxury brands with expensive option packages, the Genesis keeps it simple. The features list is all-inclusive and lengthy. Highlights: a head-up display, automated emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and a 12.3-touchscreen. Lane-keeping assist, a driver-attention monitor and active cruise control with full stop and start are also in the mix.

The Lexicon audio system is impressive. Two jumbo-sized stainless-steel speaker grilles are inset in the front doors and are among 17 speakers. The back seat console has several individual functions, including audio controls. The only downside: potential disagreements of preferred music choices between front and back seat occupants.

All passengers ride on Nappa leather seats in a spacious designer’s nirvana. The wood trim is handsome and distributed well. While passengers have it swell, the driver gets the best of it with 22 seat settings.

The twin turbo is smooth, and the large sedan accelerates from 0-60 mph in 5.3 seconds. The Genesis is confident and offers a comforting, stressless ride—ideal for long highway hauls.

It’s hard to imagine a new luxury sedan infiltrating a market stocked with iconic, well-established customer favorites. But if any car can do it, it’s the Genesis. The new spinoff works well, particularly considering it’s priced more than $25,000 less than the leaders of the pack.
