This Just In...

Economic developers in Charlotte, Collier and Lee counties have decided to form a private, non-profit marketing venture. All three groups (which are financed differently) will contribute funds to one bank account to support joint efforts on the marketing front.

Janet Watermeier, executive director of Lee's Economic Development Office, says the idea stemmed from discussions about how the groups can work better together. The idea of forming a regional economic development entity did arise, but the groups decided it wasn't the most efficient and effective idea. "We're not going to do a whole regional organization-at least not right now," she says. "We may get there someday."

Tammie Nemecek, executive director of the Collier Economic Development Council, says "for us to market as a region, it makes sense. When [companies] do their due diligence, they're going to look at all three counties."

The regional marketing venture will create joint campaigns and plan Southwest Florida's representation at trade shows around the world. "We'll be a little bit smarter . and have a more effective marketing campaign," Nemecek says.
