Open for Business

Gather 'round the screen, munch some popcorn and behold the family's future. With the help of high-resolution ultrasound technology, Fort Myers entrepreneur Wendy Riha has created a cozy theater-type atmosphere in which to show live images of unborn infants. Sneak Preview, 1342 Colonial Blvd., is a place for expectant mothers to share their joy with others-an experience that celebrates life and strengthens family bonds, Riha says.

This novel approach to the ultrasound routine adds fun to the special moment.

"After 18 years in the medical field, I'm now in the entertainment business and I'm having a ball," says Riha, a registered diagnostic medical sonographer.

The business evolved from research that led her to some California technicians who were already using special equipment commercially and offering a franchise. "I decided against a franchise because I felt I could do better. I wanted bells and whistles, and they were happy with the basics," she says.

Backed by a $140,000 loan, Riha bought the Medison Accuvix XQ, an advanced sonogram machine capable of four-dimensional color images. Then she installed a 70- by 45-inch screen and theater seats so family and friends could see moving images and features of the unborn babies. Baby Einstein music plays in the background while viewers enjoy popcorn and nosh on vending-machine snacks. A play area keeps fidgety siblings occupied.

The mother-to-be has access to sugar and chocolate-a combination that tends to make the fetus active. M&M's are Riha's favorite, as they represent the size of a 20-week-old's heart.

Sneak Preview has packages ranging from $150 to $350. Some include videos, CDs and color prints to go along with the show; gift certificates are also available. And Riha promises to have the answer to the question on every parent's mind. "Because of the detail of this machine, I can even guarantee the gender of the baby," she says. "If I'm wrong, I'll furnish the nursery."
