How some local retailers are holding their own-and thriving-against growing competition.

Macaluso, also a restaurant-business veteran, says the friendly atmosphere and food quality keep sales high, despite the increase in the number of eateries in the area.

"It's the only place I've worked where I'm relaxed when I ask diners how they like their food," he says.

And he is upbeat about new malls, because they bring new people to the area, and that's good for every owner who's confident about what his business offers.
