You might have seen Kendra Todd on The Apprentice (she was the first woman and youngest contestant to win); on her HGTV show, My House is Worth What?; on Fox News or The Tonight Show. Todd, who owns a Florida real-estate brokerage firm, is also author of the new book, Risk & Grow Rich: How to Make Millions in Real Estate, and was recently in Southwest Florida for a book signing and discussion. What is the basis of your book? Through the experience of being on The Apprentice and through some of my business decisions—some good and some not very good—I realized there are a lot of life lessons and business lessons people never learn. And here I was in this position, being able to share them on a national level. So Risk & Grow Rich was inspired by all that. It’s basically about our relationship to risk, and how our fears of failure really make an impact on our ability to walk through the door of opportunity or let it pass us by. What are you currently involved in, besides the book? I have a real estate brokerage in Delray Beach called the Kendra Todd Group; my HGTV show is one of the highest-rated shows on the network. I’m working on another book, and I travel around the country giving workshops on wealth building, empowerment for women and real estate investing. What’s your take on the Southwest Florida real estate market? I know that the next eight to 12 months are a superb time to purchase real estate. Talk about a buyer’s market. New construction and pre-construction are going to be some of the best deals out there because developers are more motivated than individual sellers because they have lots of houses to sell. If you are in the market for a home, do your research and look around and take your pick. What was it like to be on The Apprentice—and what was The Donald like? It changed me as an individual, because I think we all have a certain degree of untapped potential, and I don’t think we give ourselves enough credit for what we are able to accomplish. I was really pushed to find out what I was capable of, which was more than I ever imagined—mentally, physically, emotionally and [in] business. Donald Trump is exactly how you would think he would be. He’s extremely charming, such a shrewd businessman; he left me speechless many times. The biggest thing I learned from him was the value of establishing the right brand. His buildings sell out in a matter of hours. What plans do you have for the future? A dream of mine, which I will achieve, is creating a forum for women of all ages to achieve freedom and success in their lives. Financial freedom requires more than just a money-making plan. It has to do with positive relationships, your health, a positive mental attitude and a smart strategy for building wealth. If I can reach women and help them take control of their lives, then I’ve done a good thing. |
