He's Got Game

Hunting wild beasts is a way of life for this attorney.

P.L. Vaccariello

>>The fierce, 1,800-pound Cape buffalo lowered his heavy horns and glared at his rifle-wielding attackers. One of them was Fort Myers attorney Bruce Strayhorn. "As the animal started towards us, I took steady, determined aim," says Strayhorn. "By the time my bullet dropped him, he was less than ten steps away."

Strayhorn’s unflinching demeanor in the face of a dangerous wildlife encounter, this one in the African bush, is characteristic of the sportsman who has hunted since he was a young boy. "Hunting is a big part of my family’s way of life," he says. "It is something that we have all always enjoyed."

Elk, moose, caribou, musk ox and a bevy of other creatures have all found themselves in his sights during excursions around the globe, from Zimbabwe to the Arctic Circle as well as throughout the United States.

The wild trips abroad contrast the more civilized milieu of his professional life. He is president of Strayhorn and Strayhorn, a litigation and administrative law practice that has been in his family for three generations.

Strayhorn says he enjoys both the physical and the dangerous aspects of his sport. He also is pleased his pastime allows him to help others; he often donates fresh game he brings back to cancer patients who benefit from the meat’s high protein and purity.

"I guess hunting satisfies a kind of biological urge in me," says Strayhorn. "[It] provides me with an opportunity to see the world and to experience nature first hand."
