Hello, Goodbye and How Do You Do

Suzanne Willis

>Among the things I enjoyed most when I worked at The Ritz-Carlton, Naples, were the daily greetings by the "ladies" and "gentlemen," as personnel are called. Everyone said "hello," "good morning," "good afternoon" or "good evening" as they passed in the hallways. This lesson in common courtesy was taught on day one, and every employee participated. From a smiling "hello" from a housekeeper to a wave from the gardener or a handshake from the general manager, these greetings showed basic good manners. It demonstrates it’s easy to have respect for others, and it’s a chance to create a favorable impression.

The most important lesson about greetings and introductions is to just do it. It doesn’t matter if you’re having a bad day, or feeling shy or cranky. Even if you’ve forgotten someone’s name or you’re unsure about the proper way to introduce people, it’s much better to make an "incorrect" greeting and introduction than to not do it at all.

Here are a few tips for making introductions in a business setting:

Say the name of the most important person first. Remember that, in business, your client is more important than your boss.

Stand when you’re introducing or being introduced as a sign of respect. But use your judgment; if standing would disturb others, don’t do it.

Use a proper handshake: not too firm, not limp, and use your full hand, not your fingertips.

Overall, meeting and greeting others should be simple and pleasant; just remember to smile and look them in the eye. You’ll make others feel good, and in return they’ll feel good about you.
