Hot Couture

As predicted, 1970’s influences are back in a big way. We first saw it in tailored wear with the popularity of wide-peak lapels, and now jackets are (very slowly) starting to get longer again, just as trousers will (very slowly) widen out at the hem.

Hippy-era-inspirations are being seen beyond the silhouette of a tailored jacket, as well. We’re also seeing early signs of ethnic prints, abstract expressive patterns, and yes, florals! From Italy to Japan to New York City, flower prints are popping up everywhere.

I’m loving patterned shirting right now. I have a couple of subtle pin-dot shirts (which are probably easier to pull-off) and this new flower print just came in a couple weeks ago.

Bonus tips: Floral prints make most sense in spring and summer, with lighter-weight fabrics. Also, you should be fairly confident if you’re going to rock flower prints.

Wearing a light/neutral-colored suit (like a brown/ivory mini-stripe fine seersucker)? Try an even lighter shirt and dark tie.
