FGCU PRESENTS BUSINESS ETHICS CASE COMPETITION WINNERS

Florida Gulf Coast University’s (FGCU) Lutgert College of Business hosted its second Business Ethics Case Competition. Sam Palmisano and Erika Schell made the winning presentation of the case, “Artificial Intelligence: Tap or Slam on the Brakes?,” which addressed how AI is allowing for accurate facial and body recognition in video, opening many avenues for public safety, but potentially raising civil rights questions, a press release states. The second-place team consisted of Kelsey Gladney and Andrew Bokowy. The judges included Tom Davison, entrepreneur; Jennifer Nelson, executive director, Uncommon Friends Foundation; Acie Forrer, market president, First American Bank; Dr. Jenny Manegold, chairperson, FGCU Management Department Chair; and Dr. Diana Fandel, instructor, FGCU Management Department. The FGCU winning team qualified to represent the university at the Collegiate Ethics Case Competition at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Oct. 18-20. FGCU is one of only 25 universities to be invited to the competition. The team will also be advised by Drs. Ashley Mandeville and Jerry Schoenfeld of FGCU’s management department. FINE FOLK PIZZA WINS NATIONAL AWARD

Fort Myers-based Fine Folk Pizza has won first place in the Caputo Cup, a national award in the pizza industry. Chris Batties of Fine Folk Pizza competed with other pizza makers from across the country on Oct. 3-4 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The award-winning pizza submission, The Secret Garden, was judged based on five criteria: crust, taste, bake, visual presentation and creativity. For more information, visit finefolkpizza.com.

ATTORNEY TO DISCUSS STUDENT DISCIPLINE AT CONFERENCE

Henderson, Franklin, Starnes & Holt P.A. attorney Richard Akin will present a discussion on student discipline today for the Florida Association of Social Studies Supervisors in Orlando. He will share legal issues concerning constitutional rights of students in school, privacy, bullying, harassment, as well as disciplining students with disabilities. Akin represents many Florida school boards (before both administrative and civil courts) in tort and special education matters under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, the Family Educational Rights Privacy Act, and representation in connection with constitutional matters. He also represents municipalities, businesses, and insurance companies in civil, employment and tort claims, constitutional claims, as well as in premises and product liability matters. Akin received his undergraduate and law degree from Florida State University.

LEE HEALTH EXPANDS OB SERVICES

Lee Health will obstetrical services and offer new and renovated OB rooms at HealthPark Medical Center (HPMC). The health system will now feature 107 OB beds, and all of the newly renovated rooms at HPMC will be fully private with family sleep capabilities. This transition will create 10 additional beds across the health system and, as of March 1, the obstetrical service line currently offered at Gulf Coast Medical Center will be transferred to HealthPark.  Expansion of the HealthPark Medical Center Obstetrics Unit is underway in space vacated last year by pediatric services now at home in the new Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. Susan Ryckman, vice president of Patient Care Services, Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, has accepted additional leadership responsibilities to include obstetrics services across the Lee Health system. Susan DiMatteo is leading operations of the two obstetrics units at HealthPark Medical Center and Gulf Coast Medical Center as nursing director and will continue at HealthPark Medical Center after the migration of services. Nancy Travis, interim vice president of patient care services at Cape Coral Hospital, will continue as nursing director for the 23-bed obstetrics unit at Cape Coral Hospital, in addition to duties as interim vice president of patient care services for the entire hospital. DAVID LAWRENCE CENTER PROMOTES BUDD

David Lawrence Center (DLC) has promoted Emily Budd to director of development. In this new role, she is responsible for the planning, execution, and management for all fundraising activities, including major gifts, events, grant solicitations, donor relations, corporate partnerships and planned giving. Budd joined the DLC constituent relations team in 2017 as the associate director of development, specializing in event management, community partnerships, and strategic planning. Prior to joining DLC, she served as the career events and marketing coordinator for Florida Gulf Coast University, executive assistant to the CEO and office manager for Greater Naples Chamber of Commerce, and program and events coordinator for Champions for Learning. Budd earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in public relations with a minor in youth and nonprofit leadership from Murray State University in Kentucky. She is a graduate of the Leadership Collier Foundation Growing Associates of Naples (GAIN) Class of 2014 and currently serves as the president for the Young Professionals of Naples.

C2 COMMUNICATIONS WELCOMES SPELL

C2 Communications has welcomed Stephanie Spell as a partner and vice president of communications and content marketing. In this role, Spell will be a co-publisher of the SWFL 100, an integrated digital publication and content marketing platform that will launch in November. Throughout her 30-year career, Spell has served as chief of communications in the law enforcement industry and provided strategic leadership and communications guidance for many nonprofit organizations. She is currently serving as the chair of the Leadership Collier Foundation, president of the Youth Haven board of directors, as well as a board member for the League of Courageous Women. In addition to her role as vice president in C2 Communications, Spell will continue in her law enforcement position.

Tickets available for RedSnook Kickoff Party

The Conservancy of Southwest Florida will host a Friday Night Kickoff Party to commence its 25th annual RedSnook Catch and Release Charity Tournament from 5:30-9:30 p.m. on Nov. 2 at the Conservancy Nature Center. The event features craft beer from Naples Beach Brewery, wine, a food truck party, live auction and prize drawings. The Friday event is part of the Conservancy’s three-day fundraising fishing tournament Nov. 2-4, but Friday-only tickets are $50 per person, which include food and beverages. Throughout the years, the tournament has supported the Conservancy’s commitment to water quality protection and local fisheries. Millennial Brewing to launch Millennial Fund with party

 Millennial Brewing Company, in collaboration with the Southwest Florida Community Foundation, is kicking off the Millennial Fund for the Environment with a party held from 5-10 p.m. on Nov. 9 at its downtown Fort Myers brewery. The event will include food trucks, live music, donation jars, a raffle and a silent auction. There is no registration requirement or entry fee, and food from the trucks, as well as Millennial Brewing beer, will be available for purchase. Millennial Fund contributions will come from daily taproom sales, customer “roundup” campaigns and donations from every keg that goes into distribution. “Roundup” campaigns occur when customers round their tab to the nearest dollar.

Boo Ball gala raises $174,000 for PACE Center for Girls

The Boo Ball, a costumed fundraising gala, raised $174,000 to enhance academic and social programs at PACE Center for Girls, Lee County. More than 260 guests attended the sold-out event, which was held on Oct. 6 at the historic Burroughs Home & Gardens in Fort Myers. The fundraising event featured dinner, dancing and a live auction. Proceeds from Boo Ball benefit PACE’s programs and services, which assist girls ages 11 to 18 who have multiple risk factors impacting their academic achievement, including family income, substance abuse, domestic violence, foster home placement, neglect, grief, incarceration of a family member and physical, emotional or sexual abuse. RMC Open supports Cancer Alliance of Naples

RMC Group hosted the third annual RMC Open on Oct. 6 at Moorings Country Club to benefit the Cancer Alliance of Naples. The company exceeded its goal, raising $56,000 for the organization. The tournament included a hole-in-one shot by John Trimmer of Cape Coral on hole number four. Raffle prizes included rounds of golf, weekend getaways at area resorts, and miscellaneous PGA items.
