Glassdoor—which holds a growing database of more than 8 million company reviews, CEO approval ratings, salary reports, interview reviews and questions, benefits reviews and more—on Dec. 9 released its 2016 list of Best Places to Work in the U.S. The results were compiled by employee reviews and are divided by the top 50 large companies and top 50 small- to medium-sized companies.

Gulfshore Business researched the reviews to find trending pros and cons voiced by employees of the highly rated companies. Here is some common input:

Pros

Open-minded workplace

Passionate, intelligent, friendly and collaborative colleagues

Good work/life balance

Transparent leadership

Growth opportunities

Perks (free food, gyms, etc.)

Pet-friendly policies

Flexible Hours

Good pay

Obvious care for employees

Cons

Growing pains

Insufficient 401k plans

Too many employees

Office politics

Unclear direction

Long hours

Poor mid-level management

Poor work/life balance (This response trended in both categories.)

Taking on tasks outside of job descriptions

The take away? Happy employees thrive off of inspiring, honest leadership, encouraging and competent employees, growth opportunities and a fair work/life balance.
