From the Desk of

Marcia Schwalm, owner of Rumours Hair Design

Alex Stafford

JUST ADD WATER A hair salon inside of a houseboat may seem a tad unconventional. Marcia Schwalm says creating it was just part of God’s plan for her. Schwalm owned and operated Rumours Hair Design on dry land for nearly 25 years before anchoring the business in the Fort Myers Yacht Basin in 2008. Previously located in the River District’s historic Bradford building, when it came time to move Rumours, Schwalm struggled to find a space that reflected the hair salon’s quirky style and innovation. So she prayed. And, she says, God gave her the vision to take to the water. She kept her faith during initial challenges, and today it’s all smooth sailing.

1 This plaque was given to me by my friend Kelley. She knew of the struggles I went through to have this boat become a reality. You are never given a dream without the power to make it come true.

2 A scissor holster, or my work belt. It holds the tools of my profession.

3 Sea-Band and Motioneaze, because every so often a client may feel a little motion.

4 A vintage Marcel waver from the 1920s. It’s an electric curling iron and was one of the first electric tools made to help women look elegant.

5 A local artist created a masterpiece within this desk, found at a second-hand store. I love my desk, and so do many others.

6 A memory book with great memories of our clients at special parties and events.

7 Rumours business cards. Patricia Rich created our logo—whimsical waves, an oar and the Christian fish symbol.

8 A plaque that says, “Never, Never, Never Give Up.” If God is by your side, he can get you through all troubles, just ask. GB
