A tropical slice of Margaritaville plans to launch in Naples this year. Construction will begin this summer to convert an existing hotel on U.S. 41 into a Compass Hotel by Margaritaville, targeted for a December opening.

“The Compass Hotel Naples is replacing the Staybridge Suites Naples, said Kelly Basham, regional director at TPI Hospitality, the Minnesota-based developer and hotel management company that also is behind the Margaritaville Resort under construction on Fort Myers Beach.

“There will be no structural changes to the existing hotel, however many cosmetic changes bringing on a new, fresh feel to the area.”

The location at 4805 Tamiami Trail N. in the Park Shore area of Naples will be the first all-suite hotel in the Compass portfolio. The property, intended to have a boutique hotel look and feel, will feature 120 fully equipped suites in a paradisical setting inspired by “Margaritaville,” Jimmy Buffett’s hit song about frozen concoctions and lost shakers of salt.

“We are thrilled to partner with Margaritaville, bringing the fun and escapism of their full-scale hospitality destinations to this boutique concept in Naples, Florida,” Basham said. “This global lifestyle brand is a welcome addition to our diverse portfolio of hotels.”

Local amenities will include multiple social gathering areas replacing Staybridge’s poolside chickee bar in the courtyard of the U-shaped, four-story building. Compass plans the 5 O’Clock Somewhere Bar & Grill, named after another Buffett drinking tune. The on-site venue will offer a full menu and signature cocktails for pick-me-ups or nightcaps.

An update of The Backyard will feature an outdoor pool, live entertainment, cornhole boards, palm tree tables, fire pits and gathering spaces for friends and family. Guests also will find the “Sunrise at Compass” complimentary hot breakfast buffet and a welcome cabana with daily light snacks and refreshments.

Guest accommodations will be stylishly appointed, according to the hotel’s website, with elevated amenities such as fully equipped kitchens, LCD smart TVs, high-speed internet access and Wi-Fi. Room sizes range from open-concept studio suites to larger one- and two-bedroom suites.

Coastal touches in the hotel will be designed to echo Naples’ natural landscape.

“From the moment you walk in, you’ll be transported to the tropics with colors inspired by the sea, sand and surf,” the website promises.

To create a modern new look on the hotel’s exterior, TPI plans to first remove the
Mediterranean-style elements on the façade and roof of the existing Staybridge Suites, which was built in 1998. The renovation of the 25-year-old building includes adding new island-themed architectural elements, removing the rooftop cupola and dormers, changing up the porte-cochère and vestibule at the hotel’s main entrance and recoloring the old façade and roof.

The city pushed back a bit on the original color palette proposed when TPI’s plans were first presented to the Naples Design Review Board in October. But the façade changes were unanimously approved at the final review in late November after a bright teal color was swapped for a subtler resolute blue.

Compass by Margaritaville is one of the newest additions to the global brand’s growing collection of concepts. Compass by Margaritaville’s first property, Compass Hotel Anna Maria Sound, opened in 2020. Construction on Compass Hotel Naples is scheduled to begin in July by TPI Hospitality, the developer, owner and operator of the hotel.

“We are excited to welcome this Margaritaville brand into our portfolio of hotels,” Basham said.
