Opera Naples, one of Naples’ leading performing arts organizations, will stage “La Traviata” under the stars on March 11 and 13 at 7 p.m. The production will be part of the multiday inaugural Opera Naples Festival at Baker Park.
One of Giuseppe Verdi’s most popular operas, “La Traviata” (or “The Fallen Woman”) is also one of his most distinct. Unlike the majority of his output, which was inspired by grand historical or political events, this work’s subject matter directly addresses social issues contemporary to the composer’s time. Loosely based on the play “La Dame aux Camélias” by Alexandre Dumas, it tells the story of a sophisticated Paris courtesan who sacrifices everything for love. The melodrama in three acts is set to a libretto of Verdi’s longtime collaborator, Francesco Maria Piave. At Opera Naples, “La Traviata” will be presented as a fully staged production with Ramón Tebar, the artistic and music director of Opera Naples, conducting the Naples Festival Orchestra.
The multiday festival will also feature renowned top tenor Joseph Calleja on March 10 and Leonard Bernstein’s “West Side Story: Symphony Concert Version” on March 12. Grammy award-winning and renowned artist Isabel Leonard will star as the title role of Maria in “West Side Story.”
Planned safety and health protocols at Baker Park will include socially distanced seating, face coverings, paperless ticket entry, and digital playbills. Staff, ushers, and volunteers will be required to wear masks. Artists and musicians will be positioned at a safe distance.
