A good paycheck and plenty of perks help Chico’s FAS keep its roster full, which is crucial when the women’s specialty retailer seeks to hire individuals from larger metro areas where salaries are typically higher.
But the company, which employs about 1,330 at its Fort Myers headquarters, also nurtures prospective workers closer to home.
For example, one Chico’s executive has helped provide guidance on curriculum for Florida Gulf Coast University classes, and the company has brought in student interns from the school, according to Jill Urraro, vice president of talent at Chico’s.
“We often look outside, but we do focus on recruiting locally and within the state of Florida as much as possible,” Urraro says.
Positions filled include fashion design, marketing and merchandising.
The new hires enjoy a “competitive compensation package,” on-site daycare, fitness facility and health clinic. And during the summer, employees work half-days on Fridays, Urraro says.
When people relocate from another part of the country or state, Chico’s helps them with the expenses, and, if there is a trailing spouse, the company may be able to match him or her with one of the major employers Chico’s has started to develop relationships with for that purpose.
The bottom line is that Chico’s, unlike some other local companies, does not experience staffing gaps.
“We actually are not having a difficult time [hiring],” says Urraro.
“We truly believe that’s because we have a strong, friendly associate culture.”
