The long-awaited Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen launched Monday in Bonita Springs after years of setbacks. The fast-food franchise known for its fried chicken and Cajun-inspired food renovated a former Burger King and Citibank branch to create a new drive-thru on the west side of U.S. 41 just south of Bonita Beach Road. The Popeyes franchise encountered a number of hurdles, including the pandemic, drainage issues with the South Florida Water Management District, sidewalk engineering plans with the Florida Department of Transportation and the permitting process with city and state agencies, said Eric Royal, vice-president of real estate for Royal Family Businesses, a Belle Glade company that operates Action Business Corp., the franchisee of Popeyes locations in South Florida, including those in Bonita, Immokalee and Lehigh Acres. The building at 28186 S. Tamiami Trail, which sat vacant for more than 10 years, is the Royal’s 11th Popeyes franchise. The new restaurant is open 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
