Sprouts Healthy Communities provided a $25,000 grant, and 80 volunteers built an outdoor learning garden Saturday at Heights Elementary School in the Harlem Heights area of Lee County. The 4,500-square-foot outdoor space will be used as an educational learning lab to provide academic and nutritional education to students. The new space includes six raised garden beds, a 20-tower hydroponic system, a shade structure, outdoor classroom seating, a variety of vegetable and herb plants and fruit trees. The grant from Sprouts to build the garden was awarded last summer to the school in celebration of the company’s new store opening in south Fort Myers. The Healthy Living Collaboration of Lee County Schools will oversee the garden’s day-to-day operations. The Healthy Living Collaboration promotes healthy minds and bodies by linking multisensory, cross-curricular academics with school gardens, cafeteria menus, nutrition classes, mental health education and community outreach.
