DEADLINE SET FOR LCEC ENVIRONMENTAL FUNDING AWARDS

The deadline to apply for LCEC’s 2018 Environmental Funding Awards is Sept. 1. Interested organizations must meet certain criteria to be considered for the award including being located within LCEC service territory, funding utilized for projects/programs related to the environment and the utility industry, and having a demonstrated need for funds. Funding is awarded twice a year with deadlines happening in March and September. Through this program, nearly $20,000 was awarded in March 2018 to multiple recipients. To apply for an environmental funding award from LCEC, organizations can email pr@lcec.net to receive an application.​

YOUNG COURAGEOUS WOMEN AWARD NOMINATIONS SOUGHT

The League of Courageous Women (League) is seeking nominations for the Young Courageous Women Award, which will be presented during the organization’s first annual Women’s Leadership Summit on Sept. 28-29 at Hodges University’s Naples campus. The League is looking for young women between the ages of 12-18 who are developing integrity in their actions, display authentic leadership, and who are setting courageous goals at home, in school, or in the community. Three young women will be recognized during the opening session in the evening of Sept. 28 at the Women’s Leadership Summit. The first-place winner will receive four admissions tickets to Disney World as well as a $100 gift card. Second- and third-place award winners will also receive two admission tickets to Disney World. All award winners will receive two complimentary registrations to the Women’s Leadership Summit. Nominations are currently being accepted at www.LeagueofCourageousWomen.com/nominate.​

ALGENOL VP EARNS LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT HONOR

Algenol’s executive vice president of engineering, Ronald Chance, has been named the recipient of the 2018 Lawrence B. Evans Award in Chemical Engineering Practice, presented by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). AIChE is the world’s leading organization for chemical engineering professionals, with more than 60,000 members from over 100 countries. The Evans Award recognizes an individual for substantial lifetime achievement in one or more aspects of industrial chemical engineering practice. Chance will be formally presented with the award at the institute’s Honors Ceremony during the 2018 AIChE Annual Meeting in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Having started his career at Honeywell, ExxonMobil and Georgia Tech Institute of Technology, Chance joined Algenol in 2009. He received a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Delta State University and a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Dartmouth College. His work has resulted in more than 200 cited publications and patents.

NAPLES AREA CVB EARNS SOCIAL MEDIA AWARD

The Naples, Marco Island, Everglades Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) has been awarded the 2018 Destiny Award for Best Social Media Campaign by the U.S. Travel Association, a national, nonprofit organization representing all components of the travel industry that generates $2.4 trillion in economic output and supports 15.6 million jobs. The bureau was among two other destination finalists recognized in the social media campaign category. The CVB produced and executed an organic Facebook media campaign to show potential visitors the conditions in the destination in the days and weeks immediately following Hurricane Irma. The campaign utilized real-time photos of beaches, hotels and attractions and a series of Facebook live broadcasts to show that most of the destination, including the beaches and the majority of hotels and resorts, were open and ready to welcome visitors. Through one-on-one engagement with commenters on Facebook, the destination’s communications team was able to answer thousands of individual questions and concerns about the area. The destination saw a quick return of leisure visitors in the month of October, just one month after the storm.​

MERRILL LYNCH ADVISORS HONORED ON FORBES LIST

Naples-based Merrill Lynch wealth advisors Ryan Kowadla and Adam English were honored on Forbes’ “America’s Top Next-Generation Wealth Advisors” list. They were the only two Merrill Lynch wealth advisors in the area to make it to the list, according to a press release. Kowadla, vice president and wealth management advisor with Merrill Lynch Wealth Management, has been with Merrill Lynch for 10 years and focuses on 401K and retirement planning for his institutional clients. Kowadla received his master’s degree in business administration from Florida Gulf Coast University after earning his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Florida Atlantic University. Kowadla has served on the Alumni Board for Florida Gulf Coast University and was recently appointed to the University’s College of Business Finance Council. English, vice president senior financial advisor with Merrill Lynch Wealth Management, received his Bachelor of Science degree in business from Purdue University and has been with Merrill Lynch for 10 years. English serves on the advisory board of Parkinson Association of Southwest Florida and was recently appointed to the Board of the Purdue Alumni Association. SEPTEMBER WIB MEETING SCHEDULED

The Greater Fort Myers Chamber of Commerce Women in Business Committee (WIB) will host its September networking meeting from 4-6 p.m. on Sept. 5 at IBERIABANK in Fort Myers. Susan Minaya will present on the subject of “Developing Your Whole Self.” Minaya is the COO and chief learning strategist of Minaya Learning Global Solutions LLC, a training and education products and services company providing Fortune 500 companies around the globe, nonprofit organizations, and higher education institutions. Minaya will share research, practical perspectives, and success stories of developing the whole self and the glue that holds it all together. SWFL Wine & Food Fest to focus on mental, behavioral health

SWFL Children’s Charities Inc. is kicking off its 2019 Southwest Florida Wine & Food Fest fundraising season with a new organizational focus on mental and behavioral health. The majority of the proceeds from the 2019 Southwest Florida Wine & Food Fest’s auction will be allocated to local organizations dedicated to enhancing mental and behavioral health, with another portion of the funds continuing to support pediatric health care services at Golisano Children’s Hospital and pediatric healthcare educational programs at Florida Gulf Coast University and Florida SouthWestern State College. SWFL Children’s Charities Inc. has named Christin Collins, Brooke Denson and Debbie Toler as chairpersons of the 2019 Southwest Florida Wine & Food Fest. The Grand Tasting and Live Auction will take place at noon on Feb. 24 at the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort and Spa in Bonita Springs. The theme of the 2019 event is “Building Healthy Minds.”​ SWFL Children’s Charities Inc. has also entered a new partnership with the Southwest Florida Community Foundation to enhance its grant application and selection process. Bell Tower Shops to host fundraising event for fallen officer

In lieu of its monthly Thursday Night Live concert, Bell Tower Shops will host a fundraising event from 6-8 p.m. Aug. 23 for fallen Fort Myers police officer Adam Jobbers-Miller. Restaurants and boutiques at Bell Tower Shops, as well as community partners and law enforcement agencies, are participating in a community fundraising event and benefit concert to support the family of Jobbers-Miller. The event will take place in the parking area between Grimaldi’s Coal Brick-Oven Pizzeria and Blue Point Oyster Bar & Seafood Grille on the northeast side of Bell Tower Shops. Jobbers-Miller died July 28, exactly one week after being shot in the head while trying to apprehend a suspect accused of stealing a cellphone, according to a press release. Jobbers-Miller, 29, served the Fort Myers community as a police officer since September 2015.
