LEE COUNTY GOVERNMENT TO CLOSE PPE DISTRIBUTION SITE AT END OF WEEK

Lee County Government will close its Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) distribution site for small businesses at the end of this week and is encouraging qualifying businesses to apply now. Supplies for businesses that employ one to 25 employees will continue to be available all week. Business owners apply online at LeeFLcares.com; those who qualify are assigned a weekday time slot during which they pick up supplies at the temporary PPE distribution site at Lee County Elections Center, 13180 S. Tamiami Trail, Fort Myers. The site, which opened last week, was designed as a short-term operation to help businesses reopen. It will close at the end of the business day this Friday.
 

SALES TAX HOLIDAY FOR HURRICANE SEASON DISASTER PREP ENDS THURSDAY

A sales tax holiday, when certain disaster preparation supplies are sold tax-free, ends Thursday in Florida. The state’s 6% sales tax, as well as local sales taxes, are waived on supplies such as flashlights, batteries, bungee cords and generators up to a certain dollar amount. For example, if you buy a $750 generator in Lee County, you’ll avoid nearly $50 in taxes, WINK News reports. Hurricane season officially started Monday, although two tropical storms were named already in May. SWFL WOMAN NAMED TO NATIONAL ROOFING CONTRACTORS ASSOCIATION BOARD

Tammy Hall, director of marketing and service division for CFS Roofing Services, has been named to the board of directors of the National Roofing Contractors Association, one of the construction industry’s most respected trade associations. Hall will serve three years on the NRCA Board. Hall also serves as a board member on the Florida Roofing and Sheet Metal Contractors Association. CFS Roofing Services is a full service, licensed and insured roofing contractor in Southwest Florida. 
 

FORMER PIZZA HUT IN GOLDEN GATE WILL BE ENTERPRISE RENT-A-CAR

The former Pizza Hut at 12045 Collier Blvd. will be a future Enterprise Rent-A-Car leasing office with a detached car wash and detail bay. A complete interior renovation is underway at the 2,842-square-foot former restaurant between Mel’s Diner and McDonald’s in Golden Gate. The classic red roof was removed and replaced at the old Pizza Hut, which closed in 2017 as the brand evolved into smaller takeout and delivery locations. 
 

FLORIDA KEYS REOPEN TO VISITORS AS CHECKPOINTS ARE DISCONTINUED

Checkpoints leading into the Florida Keys were removed Monday two months after being set up to help stop the spread of the coronavirus. The checkpoints were put into place in March to keep tourists from entering the chain of islands. More than 18,750 cars coming from the mainland were turned away because drivers did not present the proper paperwork that showed they either worked or lived in the Florida Keys, WINK News reports.

NAPLES NATIVE SERVES ABOARD USS HARRY S. TRUMAN

Aviation Structural Mechanic Second Class Valerie Izaguirre, from Naples, on May 28 installed fasteners on a servo cylinder on an F/A-18F Super Hornet, assigned to the “Fighting Checkmates” of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 211, in the hangar bay of the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75). The Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group (HSTCSG) remains at sea in the Atlantic as a certified carrier strike group force ready for tasking to protect the crew from the risks posed by COVID-19, following their successful deployment to the U.S. Fifth and Sixth fleet areas of operation. Keeping HSTCSG at sea in U.S. Second Fleet, in the sustainment phase of the Optimized Fleet Response Plan (OFRP), allows the ship to maintain a high-level of readiness during the global COVID-19 pandemic, according to a news release.

STARability Foundation to host first virtual fundraiser on Saturday

Tickets are still available for STARability Foundation’s first virtual fundraiser. Virtual Bingo will be held at 6 p.m. on Saturday via Zoom and attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy a night of cash prizes, friends and fundraising to benefit the participants and programming of STARability Foundation. Local auctioneer Rick Gallo and Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Michael Walker will be the guest number callers for the event. Registration is $25 per person and will include one bingo card. Past NYC commodores award more than $128,000 in college scholarships

Dozens of students from schools throughout Collier County were awarded college scholarships this year by the Naples Yacht Club Chapter of the International Order of the Blue Gavel, enabling them to proceed to college and further their education. More than $128,000 in scholarships were presented to local high school seniors and members of Naples Yacht Club staff this year. Also included in the total is a Florida state matched scholarship grant of $10,000 that is awarded to First Generation Matching Grant Program students at Florida Gulf Coast University. Local high school students representing all nine Collier County high schools each earned a $5,000 scholarship. The Blue Gavel Scholarship Fund Committee also awarded $20,015 in scholarships to 10 Naples Yacht Club employees or employee’s children for the summer semester as well as $31,715 to 11 employees or employee’s children to attend the upcoming fall semester. Since 1998, more than 500 local students have been awarded over $1.3 million in scholarships through this organization.

Hayden rallies organizations to honor Cape High graduates

Tom Hayden, a candidate for Cape Coral City Council in District 3, has partnered with several Cape Coral businesses and organizations to honor the Class of 2020 at Cape Coral High School with 332 signs that will be on display in front of the high school along Santa Barbara Boulevard, starting Sunday. In this 50th anniversary year celebrating the incorporation of Cape Coral, the signs are a way to recognize the accomplishments of the 41st graduating class of the city’s first high school. The signs will display the graduate’s name, the school logo, and “Congratulations Class of 2020.” Hayden and members of the community will be placing the signs along Santa Barbara, beginning at 10 a.m. on Sunday. The signs will be displayed through June 13, but graduates are welcome to get their individual sign as a keepsake beginning June 11. Cape Coral businesses and organizations stepped up with donations to have the signs made by Arthur Printing. They include the Rotary Club of Cape Coral, Gary Aubuchon of Aubuchon Homes, Inc., Wayne Kirkwood of Kirkwood Electric Inc., Calusa Certified Marine, LLC, and ACWoodcraft Inc.

Belles recognized for work on behalf of The Immokalee Foundation

Neapolitans Janet and Jerry Belle were recognized for their volunteer and philanthropic work on behalf of The Immokalee Foundation during the Naples Sailing & Yacht Club’s “Community Acts of Kindness: Members with a Cause They Love.” The Belles served as co-chairs of the successful Charity Classic Celebration Gala & Golf Tournament in last November, which raised more than $2.5 million to support The Immokalee Foundation’s career-based programs for the youth of Immokalee. The Charity Classic events raise the essential funds needed for The Immokalee Foundation to continue serving more than 1,400 Immokalee youth each year with career-based educational opportunities, curriculum and experiences. Jerry Belle is a member of the board of directors for the foundation and has served as a mentor for an Immokalee student the past three years.
