Media groups are laying off and furloughing employees prompted by the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Naples-based Beasley Media Group has laid off 67 of its employees, including WPEN 97.5 The Fanatic morning co-host and former Philadelphia Eagles offensive lineman Tra Thomas and 99.5 QYK on-air personality Mark Baggio, who both confirmed their exits on social media. CEO Caroline Beasley is taking a 20% salary reduction during the second quarter, and salaries for full-time employees will be cut by 10% in the second quarter. The company furloughed 18 full-time employees and several part-time employees. Full-time hourly employees will be working 36 hours instead of 40, according to reports. Other media groups are taking similar action, including Gannett, which owns USA Today, the News-Press, Naples Daily News and others nationwide. The company will issue select unpaid newsroom furloughs through June. Gannett CEO Paul Bascobert will forgo his annual salary until furloughs and reductions are reversed. Additional Gannett executives will take a 25% pay cut.
