The Army Corps of Engineers on Nov. 16 announced its final schedule for the upcoming Lake Okeechobee Systems Operating Manual (LOSOM). The selected model, model run 260467, will reduce harmful discharges to the Caloosahatchee River Estuary. When the Army Corps announced Alternative CC back in July, the business community, including SWFL Inc., a regional chamber of commerce serving Southwest Florida, voiced concerns about the number of harmful discharges the Caloosahatchee would receive. Regional stakeholders had asked the corps to look for a more balanced approach for the distribution of flows. The selected model reduces discharges, increases flow south to the Central Everglades to an average of 200,000 acre-feet per year and provides a better water supply to the Seminole Tribe of Florida and the Lake Okeechobee Service Area, SWFL Inc. reports.
