The Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum & Aquarium on Sanibel reopened phase one of its redesigned Great Hall of Shells on May 24. The permanent exhibit space was damaged by Hurricane Ian in 2022 and has undergone a complete renovation. The updated exhibits highlight global biodiversity, shell shapes, colors and evolution, featuring standout specimens from the museum’s collection of nearly 600,000 shells. Phase two, expected later this summer, will include Southwest Florida shells, fossils, cultural uses of shells and conservation topics. The museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
