The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation completed a 3-acre oyster reef restoration in San Carlos Bay, placing 3,045 tons — or 6.09 million pounds — of fossil shell to create new habitat for marine life. Funded by $210,000 in grants from state, federal and local partners, the project aims to boost oyster populations, improve water quality and provide habitat for fish and invertebrates. SCCF officials said oyster spat have already been spotted on the reef, located between Cape Coral and the Sanibel Causeway, indicating early success. Scientists will monitor the site every six months, and the foundation hopes to restore 25 acres of oyster habitat in Charlotte Harbor.
