Homes under construction and new development are visible at the TurnLeaf community along Burnt Store Road in Punta Gorda. Residential growth along the Burnt Store corridor has fueled debate over infrastructure, commercial development and future land-use planning in Charlotte County.
Charlotte County issued 298 single-family building permits in September, an 89.8% increase from a year earlier, according to Florida Gulf Coast University’s Regional Economic Research Institute. The increase contrasted with declines elsewhere in Southwest Florida. Lee County issued 651 permits, down 16.9% year over year, while Collier County recorded 154, a 2.5% decrease. Hendry County issued 29 permits, down 12.1%, and Glades County recorded eight. Across the five-county region, 1,140 permits were issued, up 0.8% from September 2025 but down 11.4% from August.
