Collier County commissioners approved a $5 million increase in tourism advertising to boost visitation and support local hotels and businesses.

Collier County commissioners voted 4-1 to approve a $5 million increase for tourism advertising to counter slowing visitation and fill more than 1,000 new hotel rooms that have opened in the past year, with 600 more on the way. The funds, which come from tourist taxes and not property taxes, supplement the county’s $6 million base budget for marketing. Tourism leaders said international visitors are down 8.4%, led by declines from Canada and the U.K., though domestic travel has boosted hotel stays by more than 16%. Officials stressed that without expanded advertising, Collier risks losing ground to competing destinations.
