Estero Village Council voted Oct. 28 to proceed with a $19.8 million purchase of 66.7 acres of railroad corridor for the Bonita Estero Rail Trail, clearing a key hurdle for the regional project. The village agreed in March to buy the property from the Trust for Public Land. Before the vote, council members reviewed an environmental assessment involving 69 soil samples from 23 locations and a peer review of the findings. Estero’s roughly 4.1-mile segment is part of a planned 11.4-mile trail connecting Estero, Bonita Springs and North Naples. Closing is scheduled on or before Jan. 14, 2027.
