Fort Myers Police Department’s citywide surveillance system generates a massive demand for computer storage and processing power, according to city staff. City Council members at their Sept. 16 meeting authorized the purchase of a $24,311 Dell PowerEdge R760XD2 video server that will replace an existing, aging server that is unable to meet the storage, indexing and performance demands of modern surveillance. It will support hundreds of high-definition security cameras in Fort Myers that are used to protect public safety, deter crime and provide evidence in investigations, a staff report states. The Dell package includes hardware, enterprise-grade storage components and three years of 24-hour per day ProSupport.
