The Lee Board of County Commissioners approved two measures Sept. 2 to support water resources modeling and flood assessment. Commissioners renewed an annual joint-funding agreement with the U.S. Geological Survey to collect data at 12 sites across Lee County rivers and streams, continuing a partnership dating back to 1973. The $303,510 agreement includes a $99,080 USGS share and a $204,430 county share, with a $65,000 Florida Department of Environmental Protection grant amendment in process to offset costs. Commissioners also approved an amendment to an FDEP grant to increase reimbursement for water flow monitoring equipment on Telegraph and Popash creeks to $424,600. Data collected will help track pollutant loads into the Caloosahatchee River and Estuary and provide real-time information to assist with storm response and flood monitoring.
