Lee commissioners approve coastal projects

Lee County commissioners, including Brian Hamman, voted to fund a dune restoration project at Lovers Key and Bonita Beach and commit Tourist Development Tax reserves to help rebuild the fishing pier at Sanibel’s Lighthouse Beach Park.

Lee County commissioners on March 3 approved two measures to restore coastal areas damaged by Hurricane Ian. The board authorized a $245,800 contract with EarthBalance Corp. to build a 10-foot-wide dune planted with native vegetation along about 2 miles of beach at Lovers Key and Bonita Beach. Work is expected to begin in April. Commissioners also approved transferring more than $2.1 million in Tourist Development Tax reserves to help fund construction of a fishing pier at Lighthouse Beach Park in Sanibel. Federal Emergency Management Agency funding of $145,844 also will support the pier project.
