Naples Airport began a $25.4 million resiliency project that will make it the first coastal airport in the South to install elevated runway and taxiway lighting designed to withstand storm surge flooding. The project includes 1,080 elevated LED edge lights positioned 20 inches above ground level and a reconstructed electrical vault with storm-resistant features. Airport officials said the upgrades are intended to help the airfield remain operational after hurricanes and flooding events, supporting emergency response and humanitarian missions. The initiative follows damage from Hurricane Ian in 2022, when storm surge destroyed portions of the airport’s lighting and navigational systems. Construction is expected to take about 20 months and is funded through insurance proceeds, state and federal grants, and airport capital funds.
