Help a Diabetic Child, a nonprofit founded in Naples, has received a $25,000 grant from the Collier Community Foundation to assist Southwest Florida children and young adults with Type 1 diabetes. The funding will help families who cannot afford insulin, blood sugar monitoring supplies, medical services and diabetes education. The grant also covers endocrinology appointments and emotional support visits. Founded in 2013 by Tami Balavage after her teenage son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, the organization helps underserved families manage the ongoing costs of treatment.
