North Collier Fire Control and Rescue District is testing a respiratory muscle training program developed with Naples-based Airotone to evaluate its potential benefits for firefighters. About 76 firefighters began a 16-week program in August using the Airotone Trainer, a connected app and guided exercises designed to strengthen muscles used during breathing. An 18-member group also is evaluating how the training relates to self-contained breathing apparatus air-cylinder duration and other performance measures. Airotone’s device uses controlled resistance during inhalation and exhalation and tracks progress. Results and firefighter feedback will help determine how respiratory training could fit into fire-service fitness and readiness programs.
