Naples Comprehensive Health announced that Dr. Joseph Lamelas, an internationally recognized cardiothoracic surgeon and pioneer in minimally invasive valve repair and replacement, will join the NCH Rooney Heart Institute on Oct. 15. Lamelas, known for developing a two-inch chest incision approach that reduces trauma and shortens recovery compared to traditional open-heart surgery, has performed more than 18,000 procedures and trained over 1,000 surgeons worldwide. He previously served as chief of cardiothoracic surgery and professor of surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. His arrival marks a milestone in NCH’s effort to build a leading cardiovascular program in Naples.
