Grant and Anna Erickson carry on shrimping legacy

Grant Erickson and his daughter, Anna Erickson, stand at the docks of Erickson & Jensen Seafood on San Carlos Island. Anna Erickson plans to eventually take over the family business as it continues rebuilding from Hurricane Ian.

Southwest Florida shrimpers hope a new federal “Made in America” seafood label will help domestic catches compete with imported shrimp. Grant Erickson of Erickson and Jensen Shrimp Packers on Fort Myers Beach said imported farm-raised shrimp have long challenged the local industry. His company operates about 20 boats, though high diesel prices have kept some from fishing. Erickson said clearer seafood labeling could help consumers distinguish domestically caught shrimp from imports and encourage restaurants and retailers to identify their suppliers. The industry continues to face operating cost pressures as it recovers from Hurricane Ian, WINK News reports.
