Gov. Ron DeSantis vetoed a bill that would have allowed more families to pursue medical malpractice lawsuits over the deaths of adult relatives. Speaking May 29 at Gulf Coast Medical Center in south Fort Myers, DeSantis said the measure could lead to excessive litigation and higher health care costs. The bill aimed to repeal a 1990 law that bars parents from seeking noneconomic damages in cases involving the death of children age 25 or older. Health care and business groups opposed the bill, warning it could raise malpractice insurance premiums and deter physicians from practicing in Florida. The House passed the bill 104-6 and the Senate 33-4. DeSantis and opponents argued any repeal would need to include caps on noneconomic damages to prevent costly legal challenges.
