A major preservation project is underway at the Edison and Ford Winter Estates in Fort Myers. Crews are replacing the wooden roof on Thomas Edison’s main winter home, a task that hasn’t been tackled in 20 years. Given their proximity to the Caloosahatchee River, the estates face constant wear from salt air, humidity and hurricanes. The team at Edison and Ford Winter Estates is collaborating with Crowther Roofing to install historically accurate materials while preserving the structure for future generations. While the main house will be closed to visitors during the project, the rest of the estate, including the museum, guest house and Henry Ford’s home, will remain open, WINK News reports.
