Heading into the hurricane season, state property insurance provider Citizens Property Insurance Corp. experienced a decrease of nearly 13,000 customers from May 19-25. The decrease comes as three private insurers—American Integrity Insurance Company of Florida, Security First Insurance Co. and Slide Insurance Co.—began taking on batches of policies from Citizens through the depopulation program. On March 24, Citizens had 1,188,557 policies, a decrease of 12,979 policies from a week earlier. State officials continue to work to reduce the size of Citizens, the insurer of last resort, as several private insurers have left the state in the last few years. Citizens had as many as 1.41 million policies in fall 2023. The state’s Office of Insurance Regulation reports 19 insurance companies are seeking a rate decrease or no increase this year.
