Lee commissioners on June 3 scheduled a public hearing for 9:30 a.m. June 17 to consider a new rule that would ban smoking and vaping at county parks and public beaches. Florida statutes leave the regulation of smoking to the state, with exceptions for local governments at county parks and beaches. However, unfiltered cigars are exempt under the statute. If approved, Lee County Parks & Recreation will enforce the rule with fines of $100 for a first offense, $200 for a second and $300 for a third.
