Lee Health Heart Institute is participating in a clinical trial designed to reduce stroke risk in patients following heart surgery. Led by cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. David Cervantes, the study explores whether closing off the heart’s left atrial appendage — where 90% of clots form in atrial fibrillation patients — can lower stroke risk, even in those without A-fib. The procedure uses a small clip to seal the appendage, preventing blood from entering and clotting. It does not affect the heart’s pumping ability. The institute has enrolled 100 participants, making it one of the top trial sites globally. Results from the study, which concludes in July, are expected later this year, WINK News reports.
