The Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida is seeking to join a federal lawsuit challenging the state’s immigrant-detention center in the Big Cypress National Preserve. Citing environmental and cultural concerns, the Tribe says the facility threatens sacred sites, hunting grounds and traditional ceremonies near 10 tribal villages. Lawyers argue that no required environmental impact study was conducted prior to development. Dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz” by Gov. Ron DeSantis, the facility is expected to house up to 5,000 detainees. Critics, including U.S. Rep. Maxwell Frost, have called the conditions inhumane, while state officials defend the center and dispute federal oversight requirements.
