Sanibel City Council is considering a new tiered set of fines for violating the rules on the island’s shared-use path, a network of 26 miles of paths that span the island. Current rules provide for a maximum fine of $500 for violations, while city management said a progressive, tiered approach may result in better compliance by users. Tiered fines would mean a written warning for first offenses, a $100 civil penalty for a second offense if paid within five days or $150 after that, $350 for a third offense and $500 for subsequent offenses, including a $10 filing fee for offense numbers two and up. A discussion of the draft ordinance and public hearing is set for the regular City Council meeting on July 15.
