Sanibel Mayor Richard Johnson announced Lighthouse Beach Park will reopen June 16 after sustaining damage from Hurricane Ian more than eight months ago. It marks the last of the island’s public beaches to reopen. The Sanibel Lighthouse, built in 1884, was deemed structurally sound in October despite losing one of its four legs and the foundation to its ground-level stairs during the storm, but the two homes and fishing pier near the landmark were destroyed.
