Tarpon Bay Explorers, the recreation concession for the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island, reopened this month with limited services after suffering extensive damage during Hurricane Ian. The business lost most of its paddlecraft and all of its pontoon boats, rental bikes and trams during the Sept. 28 storm. Planning to open in phases, Tarpon Bay Explorers’ Gift & Nature Store is back up and running, along with kayak and paddleboard rentals. The ramp also opened for nonmotorized vessel launching. Current business hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Boat cruises aren’t anticipated to relaunch until next year.
