Lee County is experiencing a shortage of teachers for its public schools, with the standout issue being low salaries. The Teacher’s Association of Lee County union is getting involved to fill the 200 open positions while trying to keep current teachers from leaving. The School District of Lee County allocated money into a fund to hire more people. However, educators say the money should go into the current teaching staff budget. The starting salary for a Lee County teacher begins at about $48,250. In nearby counties, the starting salary is much higher. Collier County starts teachers at about $53,000. Charlotte starts at about $52,000 and DeSoto County starts at about $51,000, WINK News reports.
