Dining out plays a central role in Southwest Florida’s economy, where hospitality remains one of the region’s most dynamic industries. As restaurants open, close and reinvent themselves regularly, the culinary scene reflects broader patterns of growth, risk and consumer demand. In each issue, we ask a local business or civic leader to name three local restaurants they return to regularly, offering a flavorful snapshot of the places shaping Southwest Florida’s lifestyle and business culture.

Dr. Larry Antonucci is president and CEO of Lee Health in Fort Myers. He shares three of his favorite Italian restaurants that keep him as a repeat customer.

San Matteo’s Margherita pizza reflects Naples roots

A Margherita pizza from San Matteo in Fort Myers showcases the restaurant’s commitment to authentic Neapolitan-style cooking. Dr. Larry Antonucci says the simple combination of crust, sauce and fresh mozzarella keeps him coming back.

For me, San Matteo delivers an experience that feels authentic. The Margherita pizza specifically is as close to Naples, Italy, as you will find. It offers the perfect balance between the crust, sauce and fresh mozzarella. There’s an authenticity here that’s hard to replicate, and it’s what keeps me coming back. It’s a reminder that the simplest dishes can be the most memorable.

Bruno’s seafood Fra Diavolo blends spice and flavor

Seafood Fra Diavolo is among the standout menu items at Bruno’s of Brooklyn in downtown Fort Myers. Antonucci says the dish’s balance of heat and flavor complements the restaurant’s welcoming atmosphere and hospitality.

Bruno’s of Brooklyn

Seafood Fra Diavolo

Bruno’s of Brooklyn stands out for more than just the food: It’s the people who make the meal. Chef Cal and his wife Genevieve create an environment that feels welcoming and personal from the moment you walk in. The seafood Fra Diavolo has just the right balance of heat and flavor, and the downtown energy adds to the experience. It’s the kind of place where great food and genuine hospitality come together seamlessly.
