Southwest Florida nonprofits generate $4.3B in revenue

Southwest Florida nonprofits support jobs and economic growth

The Naples Children Foundation is among approximately 1,600 nonprofits in Collier, Lee and Charlotte counties that generated $4.3 billion in annual revenue and supported 21,465 jobs, according to the Florida Nonprofit Alliance.

Just because they’re not-for-profit doesn’t mean these organizations aren’t making an economic impact.

Southwest Florida’s nonprofits brought in about $4.3 billion in revenue last year, according to the Florida Nonprofit Alliance. The roughly 1,600 nonprofits in Collier, Lee and Charlotte counties generated about $1.5 billion in direct value added, a measure of their contribution to the region’s gross regional product.

For the study, the alliance looked at nonprofits that have been active for the past four years and have at least $50,000 in revenue. That ranges from smaller organizations staffed largely by volunteers to major employers such as Naples Comprehensive Health. Southwest Florida’s nonprofits employed 21,465 people in the region — and that doesn’t include the substantial hours of volunteer labor that allow many of these organizations to function.

Public and societal nonprofits — including Naples Children Foundation and the Quality Life Center in Fort Myers, along with many family foundations — are the most common in the region, accounting for approximately 35% of all organizations, according to Florida Nonprofit Alliance.

Statewide, about 23,224 nonprofits employ roughly half a million people. However, Florida ranks among the bottom 10 nationally with only 2.6 nonprofits per 1,000 households, in part reflecting the state’s rapid population growth in recent years. The statewide average annual salary for a nonprofit job was around $67,000, while salaries in Southwest Florida were lower.
