The labor market has been rather sluggish lately. Unemployment has hovered between 4% and 4.5% for more than a year. Last year was marked by slow job growth, particularly due to fluctuating tariffs and increased labor costs, not to mention an overall uncertainty about the economy. And this year hasn’t gotten any better, as the Iran war is disrupting economies worldwide.
In Southwest Florida, trends are also indicating a rather uninspiring market. Unemployment for Collier (4.6%), Lee (4.9%) and Charlotte (5.6%) counties all remain above the national average, according to the latest figures released in December. The health care industry remains strong, but lagging industries, such as construction and hospitality, have especially hindered the labor market locally. For instance, the hospitality industry in Southwest Florida has continuously shed jobs since hitting a post-pandemic peak in 2024.
Overall, there’s no need to panic quite yet about the labor market — but no reason to celebrate, either.
