The entrance to Fort Myers City Council chambers at City Hall in downtown Fort Myers.
Fort Myers City Council on Sept. 8 approved a $750,000 Florida Department of Environmental Protection grant to reconstruct the boardwalk at Calusa Nature Center & Planetarium.
The 1,776-foot, 1970s-era walkway allowed visitors to meander through the Nature Center preserve but remains closed after years of use and hurricane damage.
In June, City Council approved a $98,000 professional services agreement with EnSite Inc. for the planning, permitting and administrative stage of the project.
The nonprofit Calusa Nature Center sits on 105 acres off Ortiz Avenue. It contains the largest open green space in Fort Myers, according to city staff, along with a variety of environmental education programs and attractions.
