Collier County approves work to reduce Immokalee Road congestion 

One of Collier County’s most congested roads will get another right-turn lane to expedite traffic onto Oil Well Road in northern Golden Gate Estates. 

The Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously on June 23 to award a $807,029.10 contract to Quality Enterprises USA, the lowest qualified responsible bidder out of four. The contract includes a $50,000 owner’s allowance in case of unforeseen circumstances during construction. Because it was part of the consent agenda, which involves routine, non-controversial items, there was no discussion. 

Others that submitted bids were Preferred Materials Inc. of Fort Myers, $970,291.90; Coastal Concrete Products LLC of Fort Myers, $981,121.00; and North Venice-based Ajax Paving Industries of Florida LLC, $1,261,126.30. 

County documents show the project will add a second northbound right-turn lane on Immokalee Road at the Oil Well Road intersection. Included will be milling and resurfacing of the existing pavement; drainage, signal and street-lighting work; and relocation of an existing bus stop on Immokalee Road. 

The contract requires Quality Enterprises to provide payment and performance bonds. In a memo to county commissioners, Katherine Chachere, a Transportation Engineering Division project manager, noted the company has performed a “substantial amount of work” for the county. 

Traffic backups on Immokalee Road increase during peak commuting and “high season” hours. The delays are largely driven by rapid residential growth in the Estates and new commercial developments, resulting in heavy-traffic volume and frequent crash-related lane closures. 

The turn-lane project is among several ongoing to reduce congestion and improve drivability in that area.  

The two-lane undivided Randall Boulevard will be turned into a four-lane divided road with a 44-foot median, with three left-turn lanes from westbound Randall Boulevard onto westbound Immokalee Road; signal upgrades will be added. An 11-foot-wide continuous flow right-turn lane from eastbound Immokalee Road to eastbound Randall Boulevard also will be built. Construction is anticipated to begin in the third quarter of 2026. 

Oil Well Road from Everglades Boulevard to Oil Well Grade Road, east of DeSoto Boulevard, also will be widened from two to four lanes on a six-lane footprint between Everglades Boulevard and Oil Well Grade Road.
