FGCU student Jose Cintron, 21, opened Hause of Fades at University Village near campus. The nearly 2,000-square-foot barbershop has 17 chairs, TVs, gaming consoles and a pool table — and employs two barbers who have been cutting Cintron’s hair for years.

Jose Cintron grew up with the same two barbers cutting his hair. On Sept. 28, the 21-year-old Florida Gulf Coast University student became their landlord.

Hause of Fades, a new barbershop owned by Cintron with the backing of private investors, opened at University Village shopping center near FGCU. It’s at 19800 Village Center Drive, Suite 155, next door to Smoothie King in nearly 2,000 square feet of space.

Hause of Fades is across the way from Sienna Ray Salon and Spa, which rebranded two years ago from Beehive Beauty Company. The presence of the salon delayed Hause of Fades from opening, as the shopping center didn’t want to cannibalize the two haircutting businesses. But with Sienna Ray geared toward women and Hause of Fades geared toward men, the proximity works.

“We wanted to bring in a barbershop that brings an old-school, traditional, community feel,” Cintron said. “But we also wanted to bring in new school and a new class of barbershop.”

Hause of Fades recently opened in Suite 155 at University Village near Florida Gulf Coast University. The nearly 2,000-square-foot barbershop is owned by 21-year-old FGCU student Jose Cintron and has 17 barber chairs.

Cintron, a 2023 graduate of First Baptist Academy in Naples, worked for various construction companies on Marco Island while in high school. He said it cost about $200,000 to build out the interior of the barbershop.

Cintron outfitted Hause of Fades with four big-screen TVs, Xbox and Sony PlayStation game consoles and a pool table.

“I wanted to make something for the community,” Cintron said. “You want to build a space that’s productive for the barbers who work here.”

Barbers Angel Andalon and Nataly Galarza have been cutting Cintron’s hair for years. A couple of years ago, they each faced moving from one barbershop to another because of rising rents. That’s when Cintron had an epiphany, to start a barbershop of his own.

Andalon, Galarza and six other barbers pay Cintron a flat rate for their portion of the space. Cintron pays the landlord.

There are 17 barber chairs at Hause of Fades, allowing for future growth.

Walk-in prices start at $30 for children 12 and younger, $40 for adults, $45 for a haircut with a beard trim and $25 for senior citizens. Appointment booking is also available. Hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Hause of Fades features 17 barber chairs, multiple televisions, gaming consoles, a pool table and seating areas inside its nearly 2,000-square-foot space at University Village. Owner Jose Cintron said he wanted to create a community-oriented barbershop with room for future growth.

“This has been in the works for years now,” Galarza said.

Hause of Fades makes for some busy days for Cintron. He begins his morning with a workout, then works part time for a landscaping company. In the afternoon, he swings into Hause of Fades to make sure things are running smoothly. In the evening, he attends his FGCU classes. He’s on track to graduate in fall 2027 with a degree in construction management, and he’s also working toward his general contractor’s license.

“I’m trying to work as hard as I can when I’m young, so when I’m old, I won’t have to,” Cintron said.
