Now it’s LA Fitness’ turn for a makeover.
The health club at Gulf Coast Town Center will close April 27 and reopen about June 16, according to a letter sent to members last week.
The remodel will cost $2.5 million, the first major overhaul since the health club opened at Gulf Coast Town Center in November 2005.
The letter explained that the health club will stop billing members for monthly dues beginning April 27. Billing won’t resume until July.
Members will be able to use LA Fitness locations anywhere in Florida while the Gulf Coast Town Center location is closed. The closest Southwest Florida locations are Vanderbilt Beach Road in North Naples and Del Prado Boulevard in Cape Coral.
The corporate headquarters in Irvine, California, didn’t respond to email and phone inquiries over a two-week period.
Construction already has started in some parts of the club. The pool, basketball and racquetball courts and the aerobics area closed in February.
Signs in the club list 13 improvements, including replastering the pool and spa, new tile flooring in the pool area, new tile and lockers in the locker room, refinished basketball and racquetball courts and aerobics room, rubber flooring in the free weight area, a new personal training area and a Pilates by LA Fitness studio. The club will no longer have a day care area. Some new weightroom equipment will be added.
Sara Henry, a triathlete, has been a member for five years.
She hasn’t been able to take spin classes since the spin area has been closed for four weeks.
“That kind of makes me angry,” she said.
She also hasn’t been able to swim because the pool has been closed. Henry joined Florida Gulf Coast University’s aquatic program so she could workout.
Even though she’s not very happy with the closing, the remodeling is needed, Henry said.
She said she will return when the club reopens.
